With the primary focus of access and equity, the STEM Research Academy enrolls high performing, under-resourced NYC high school students. CUNY encourages students to take honors and Advanced Placement courses when possible, including those offered through CUNY’s College Now program if you attend a New York City public high school. These services include: tutoring, academic and personal counseling, SAT prep, College Prep, Mentoring, and Advocacy, among others. The initiative provides eligible students with a range of services structured to facilitate their ability to persist through high school completion and admissions as competitive candidates for postsecondary education and the workforce. The CCNY College Now STEM Research Academy is designed to provide high school students with an opportunity to develop the essential skills to be strong scientific thinkers by engaging in authentic, inquiry-based, and research activities. CUNY schools are known for their affordability, high-quality instruction, and research; they also make up the biggest urban public university system in the United States. HIRES is a program within the CREST CUNY Institute which offers high scho ol students an opportunity to work closely with scientists in the field and in labs, collect and analyze data, present at conferences, and more! As a result of their urban location, most students commute . Upon completion of the course, students learn the significance of inquiry, self-advocacy, the societal impact of their mentor’s research and how to conduct research independently. Selected students will be enrolled in a Spring 2020 course in an area of research science. It is preferable for students to fill course schedules with a majority of core academic courses each marking period, including four each semester during their senior year.
